7 Unique Experiences In and Around Lake George

The Lake George Region offers plenty of pristine lakes for water adventures and fishing, sandy beaches for sunbathing and relaxing, and countless mountains and trails to explore, but you’ll also find a variety of rather unique and unexpected experiences in the Lake George Region.

From parasailing and whitewater rafting to drive-in movies and championship rodeos, here are seven unique Lake George experiences you’ll be talking about for years to come.

Ziplining & Ropes Courses

Reach new heights at one of the Lake George area’s zipline and aerial adventure courses. Located in Bolton Landing, Adirondack Extreme offers several treetop adventures, including two designated courses for younger children and multiple courses for adults and older kids, featuring more than 100 obstacles and as many as 15 ziplines. Just south of Lake George, in the Town of Lake Luzerne, Adirondack Adventure Center features six different treetop adventure courses of varying heights and difficulty, as well as 62 obstacles and several high-speed ziplines (plus, lazy river tubing and whitewater rafting.)

Drive-In Movies

The Glen Drive-In is one of only a few remaining drive-in movie theaters in the United States. Located on Route 9, just south of Lake George in Queensbury, NY, the Glen Drive-In has been open since 1958. Choose from two movie screens, each offering a double feature every night in the summer, and enjoy two movies for one low admission price. You’ll also find restrooms on site, and a Snack Bar with popcorn, beverages, candy, and more for a truly unique family-friendly night out.

River Tubing & Whitewater Rafting

Located at the confluence of the Hudson and Sacandaga Rivers, nearby Lake Luzerne has several outdoor centers offering lazy river tubing and whitewater rafting with rip-roaring Class II to Class V rapids in several sections. Visit Tubby Tubes River Co., Adirondack Adventure Center, River Ridin’ and Sacandaga Outdoor Center to book a unique, thrill-seeking Adirondack excursion and learn how to navigate the whitecapped waves with an experienced guide.

Railbike Tours

Explore the beautiful Adirondack forests on a rail trail bike specially-designed for traversing the region’s old railroad tracks. Revolution Rail Co. offers two-seater and four-seater bikes, and features four tours of varying lengths and duration, including the Hadley Station run, which departs from nearby Hadley, NY. Book your tour online, and get ready to pedal through the pine canopy and across a spectacular 90′ high bridge that overlooks the Hudson and Sacandaga Rivers.

Parasailing

Typically reserved for coastal destinations around the world, parasailing offers a truly unique way to explore the “Queen of American Lakes”.  Enjoy a speedboat ride around Lake George and approximately 8 minutes of air time, strapped into a harness, soaring 200-400 feet above the water. Both Parasail Joe’s and Parasail Nation make this extreme sport safe and fun for all ages, and while there’s no swimming required, you can choose to dip your toes in the water for an extra bit of fun.

Hot Air Balloon Rides

In addition to the annual Adirondack Balloon Festival every fall, several hot air balloon pilots offer scenic hot air balloon flights in the Lake George area. Book a private or group ride with A Beautiful Balloon in Lake George, Sunkiss Ballooning and Majestic Balloon Flights in Queensbury, or Ballooning Adventures in Glens Falls, and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience as you float peacefully over rolling farmland and above the Adirondack Mountains.

Championship Rodeo

Offering family-friendly entertainment and southern-style barbecue all summer long, the Painted Pony Championship Rodeo in Lake Luzerne is a truly unique Lake George experience. Kick off the evening with a BBQ Dinner and drinks at the Longhorn Saloon, then head over to the Rodeo Arena for all the action. Enjoy classic Western Rodeo Events, including bull riding, roping, steer wrestling, breakaway racing, bronco riding and barrel racing, as well as rodeo clowns and other performers.
