Marshmallows roasting on a small campfire

How to Have the Perfect Campfire: Tips, Safety & S’more Recipes

Summer evenings in Lake George are all about the warm glow of a campfire, surrounded by Adirondack chairs and the smiling faces of friends and family, and the time-honored tradition of toasting marshmallows and making s’mores.

Cramer’s Point Lake Breeze has a large bonfire pit on the property for just this sort of evening, and many of our Lake George cabins are equipped with Solo stove fire pits, as well. For vacation memories that will last a lifetime, check out these campfire tips and our favorite s’mores recipes.

Campfire Safety

Solo Stoves are designed to minimize smoke, but the outer walls of the stove still get very hot. Whether you’re using a Solo Stove or a fire pit, always follow these rules to keep everyone safe.

  • Only build a fire in a designated fire pit or fireplace.
  • Maintain a safe distance from the fire and never touch the flames.
  • Educate children about fire safety and never leave children or pets unattended.
  • Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby to extinguish the fire, if needed.
  • If using roasting forks to toast marshmallows, be careful not to touch the hot end or place it in your mouth.
  • Never leave your campfire unattended.

Campfire Tips

The secret to a perfect campfire involves using the right materials, arranging them for optimal airflow, and ensuring a safe and controlled environment.

  • Start with tinder, such as dry leaves, pine needles, pine cones or crumpled up newspaper.
  • Arrange a layer of kindling, such as small, dry twigs and sticks, around the tinder.
  • Use a lighter or match to ignite the tinder.
  • Once the kindling is burning well, gradually add small pieces of dry wood.
  • When you have a good bed of embers, add larger pieces of wood to keep the fire going.

S’mores Recipes

Opt for the classic combination of toasted marshmallow and chocolate bar sandwiched between two graham crackers, or level up your s’mores game with these alternative ingredients.

  • Substitute the graham crackers with fudge stripe cookies or chocolate chip cookies.
  • Swap the chocolate bar for dark chocolate, white chocolate or another chocolate candy, like Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups or Ghirardelli Sea Salt Caramel Squares.
  • Add a bit of fruit, like sliced bananas, strawberries or raspberries, instead of (or in addition to) the chocolate.
  • Spread Nutella or peanut butter on your graham crackers.
  • Skewer a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup with your roasting fork, dip it in marshmallow fluff, toast it like a marshmallow, and gently press it between two graham crackers.
  • Take a banana still in its peel and slice it the long way, add mini marshmallows, chocolate chips and a drizzle of caramel sauce, wrap in foil and place on the fire/grill for 30-45 seconds, then eat with a spoon. Or, fill a sugar cone with the ingredients and bake it the same way.
